Important safety information

Warning: risk of thyroid C-cell tumors

In studies in rodents, tirzepatide caused thyroid C-cell tumors. It is not known whether it causes these tumors, including medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), in people. Do not use it if you or a family member has had MTC, or if you have MEN 2. Tell your provider right away about a lump or swelling in your neck, trouble swallowing, hoarseness or shortness of breath.

Serious side effects can include

  • Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis): severe stomach pain that may spread to your back
  • Gallbladder problems, including gallstones
  • Low blood sugar, especially with insulin or a sulfonylurea
  • Kidney problems, which dehydration from vomiting or diarrhea can worsen
  • Serious allergic reactions
  • Vision changes in people with type 2 diabetes

Common side effects

Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, stomach pain, indigestion, decreased appetite and injection-site reactions. These are often mild and tend to ease over time.

Before you start

Tell your provider about all your conditions and medications. Tirzepatide can make birth control pills less effective after you start and after each dose increase. Do not use it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
